Normandy

We arrived in Bayeux late in the evening and checked into our AirbnB.  It was in a great location and a very nice place. The town of Bayeux is very cute and we enjoyed our few days there away from the big city.

We had an early start the next morning for a tour to Mont St Michel Abbey.  We met our driver at 8:30am for the 1 1/2 hour drive to the Abbey.

The first view was as impressive as I remember it.

We were there at low tide.  Mont St Michel experiences extreme tides (the difference can be 50ft).....the highest tides in Europe.

We walked through the little streets up to the Abbey for a tour with our guide.

The views are pretty spectacular....

At this point it was pretty cold up there, but later on the sun came out and we sat outside for lunch.

During high tide the Abbey is an island surrounded by water......during our low tide visit you can barely see any water in the distance

Towards the end of our visit we had to go to the bathroom again and the cost to go to the bathroom was 1 euro at the bottom of the hill and it was free at the top of the hill :) Haha.  So, we decided to go back to the top and Evan said he knew a shortcut through these narrow alley

On the way back we walked across the bridge to get back to the van (there are no cars on the island and on the way there we took a shuttle)

It was a great day tour to visit Mont St Michel.

We spent the evening exploring Bayeux a little more....

We stopped in a Pub for a drink and snack

The next morning we walked around town again and stopped in a few bakeries for breakfast!  In the afternoon we had a Normandy D-Day Beaches tour booked.  This tour was very interesting and we all learned a lot.

Our first stop was Pointe Du Hoc.  We learned a lot about the mission of June 6th, 1944 and saw remnants of the German Bunkers.

These are the cliffs that US Rangers had to scale.

Next stop was Omaha Beach, where the beach landings took place.  We learned about the enormous effort it took to plan these landings.

We also stopped at the American Cemetery

This tour was very eye opening and fascinating.
